Eden

It is said that 2008 is the revolutionary year for Eden. Eden was rebuilt over the winter of 1999 and it was last summer that Eden updated and improved the club to meet the decent club standards of Ibiza by offering two rooms of music, mezzanine areas, a new sound system and plenty of bars to service an increased capacity of 4,500 people. With the likes of Dave Pearce and Judge Jules hosting their own nights, 9 bars plus a seperate "isolation bar" in the rear of the club with its own decks and soundproof floor to ceiling sliding glass doors with capacity for a few hundred and an after hours bar in the Garden Of Eden next to it, Eden has transformed itself into one of the most highly anticípated clubs on the island. Eden has lost it's old 18-30 image and is now a credible alternative & brave competition to Es Paradis which is located right next door.

During the summer Gatecrasher moved from Pacha to host Wednesday nights at Eden, though they lost their resident Roger Sanchez in the process, they have undoubtedly made a serious impact on the San Antonio scene and that of the island as a whole. This year it looks like Dave Pearce and Judge Jules will be back, so San Antonio once again will be taking on San Rafael & Ibiza. Yet, another favourite this summer is Pete Tong who moves to Eden bringing an excellent and worthy house night to San Antonio, including a weekly residency of Groove Armada.

So, whatever your particular vibe, whether you prefer music from Judge Jules, or sounds from Radio 1 favourite DJ Pete Tong, or the crazy sounds of Dave Pearce, there is something for most at Eden, and no excuse to not see at least one night during your Ibiza trip.

Location
It is located directly on the waterfront of San Antonio, opposite the front door to Es Paradis. Eden is an ideal town-based club that has never failed to deliver and this year will be no different.

Flights

During the summer, there are a host of airlines to choose from. Hardly surprising, considering that Ibiza has traditionally been considered a summer destination. During the winter, Iberia has been first choice for many years, and this is partly due to the number of Spaniards visiting family and business commuting throughout the season. Nowadays they may face some stiff competition from Ryanair, who have announced the introduction of their year-round flights.

This move has been welcomed by Ibiza, whose tourist board have drawn up an entire winter programme of entertainment, sports and culture for those coming to Ibiza in the quieter months.

Listed here are the airlines which service the island in both seasons. In an attempt to avoid favouritism, we've opted for an alphabetical listing.

Of course, if flying on a budget isn't your bag, we have just the thing for you. How about your very own private jet? Pick your own flight times, travel in ultimate luxury, and enjoy the very pinnacle in executive pampering. Just click here Private Jet.

Kehakuma - Damian Schwartz

Kehakuma - The Season Begins.......

Kehakuma opened last week to a packed house of underground music aficionados ready to enjoy the musical adventures that are in store over the coming months. The queues outside were testament to the popularity the night has already established on the island and the Terraza, Sunset Terrace and Red Box played host to the night's festivities. Simon Baker was on early duty on the Sunset Terrace and styled his way through his customary chunky house grooves to the busy early crowd.

The main action took place on the Terraza, where Mihai Popoviciu made the first of what will eventually be several major steps in making his name on the island this year. He was followed by someone also fairly new to playing gigs in Ibiza but has spent the past 12 months becoming the hottest name around, Maya Jane Coles, who safe to say, fairly obliterated the famous terrace. Her sound had a constant energy to it but maintained a solid rhythm, that locked in the groove from Mihai's set and positioned things nicely for Kehakuma top boy Nick Curly to end the night's proceedings. The German who plays more dates than anyone for the party this year, relished in the closing set role and road-testing several of his new productions to great effect; what a way to start.

Over the course of the coming months, Thursdays at Space will welcome the great and the good of the underground house scene with guests from last year returning in the form of Guy Gerber, Radio Slave, Seth Troxler and Tiefschwarz, as well as a new wave of performer's that are set to be the next generation of stars in Ibiza and beyond. All the members of the Visionquest quartet appear at some point and Nick Curly's Mannheim compatriots like Johnny D, Federico Molinari and Ray Okpara also play a key role. Edu Imbernon flies the flag for Spain with a series of gigs and Jamie Jones headlines two parties, including a huge closing bash that also features Nick Curly, Mathias Kaden, Simon Baker and Glimpse.

Space

To secure its own niche in a very competitive and world famous market, it has become what must be the most successful day & night time club - and what a theory! Space opens its doors virtually 7 days a week, 22 hours a day... and opens them to the hard core of the visiting and resident party animals who were enjoying themselves at other clubs until they shut. These people cover the spectrum of musical taste and are catered for by the contrasts provided at Space. Inside in the dark interior the pumping house music throbs out incessantly, building from one crescendo to another. Outside on the terrace in the early morning sun, more ambient or funky tunes reminiscent of the Cafe del Mar at sunset punctuate the conversation.

History
This unique club was the brainchild of Pepe Rosello, born in San Antonio in 1937. His first encounter with public entertainment came in 1956 in local restaurant businesses, then at "El Refugio" - a classy restaurant which most of us will know as Gorms Garage. In those days it was a very different San Antonio - a jet-set paradise for the bourgouisie with their yachts moored in the harbour. Then word got out and the younger crowd discovered Ibiza. Opposite "El Refugio" was a jazz club, "La Reja", which was one of the first establishments to obtain a music license - for their piano.. Inspired by the concept of musical entertainment, Pepe discovered the terrace concept which has served him so well ever since. In those days the music was live and predominantly Irish folk, the sort that you couldn't resist dancing to.

However, even back then there was a mixture of live music and disc jockeys. Inevitably the restaurant changed as a younger crowd discovered the island with the advent of tourism. Demand for food was exceeded by demand for music and dancing and as Pepe was providing the latter, demand soon exceeded available space. In Playa d'en Bossa in 1987 he found a conference centre, built some 4 years earlier, that had also served as a discoteque in the evenings for those same conference attendees. When he took it over he completely renovated the existing building and enclosed it within a large perimeter fence. This allowed the creation of a huge outside terrace area. The same terrace that has become probably the most famous terrace in the world today.

The terrace concept is fundamental. The theory behind Space was to provide a large enough area to be able to offer a variety of different environments. You choose that which suits you best or roam between the different options. Pepe, being Ibicenco, has always had a love of night life. In Franco's days the bars had to shut by 1 am and the clubs no more than two hours later. Eventually the law was extended by another hour, then another, to the point where the current law demands only that you close for 2 hours each day. In other words, you can pretty much well choose which 2 hours of the day to call in the cleaner!

The ultimate solution arrived when "Home" began their mega-parties which ran from 8 am on Sunday morning till 6 am on Monday mornings. With almost all of the worlds top DJs performing at one or other of their regular weekenders, success was guaranteed and there was still time to get home, shower and have breakfast before going to work!

Things weren't always this way however. In Pepe's early days music was either live or provided by radio and later TV. Nowadays, the DJ is in the ascendancy and controls the industry. This is ironic because DJs originally achieved this status because it was cheaper to employ a bloke to put records on than to hire a PA and employ 4 or more musicians to stand on a stage all night. This is now largely untrue as "name" DJs cost more than the aforementioned "band". So what does the future hold? It could be that "entertainment" gigs, along the lines being pursued by Manumission, will come to the fore, with more emphasis on the show than the "name" DJ. There is also a movement back towards lyrics nowadays in the face of a decade of beat driven music. The theory is that lyrics are far more thought provoking than simple notes on a musical instrument can ever be. The counter argument is that music is multilingual. It means the same and creates the same emotions whatever language you speak or wherever on the planet you live.

Young people are now becoming more intellectual, or spiritually and environmentally aware. Respecting their planet and taking more care of their health, diet and fitness. Some would say that music has become a popular religious alternative, and this is the direction and responsibility that music has to deal with. A major responsibility for music and something that is understood best by the people who make music and those who provide the places where it can be heard. Thank you Pepe and the other 120 plus people who make Space work, predominently Ibicencos, many of whom have been working with him for over 30 years. Without your commitment and eternal love of music, Ibiza may well not have become the legend that it is?

Amnesia

The house where Amnesia now stands was built at the end of the 18th century. Five generations of the Planells family lived within its thick, whitewashed walls. They cultivated the land and built a mill out of stone. During the first half of the 10th century the poor that came to beg, received bread, cheese and dried figs.

The first foreign visitors to come to the island arrived towards 1950. They were drawn to the island by rumors of its mysterious legends and its breathtaking untouched nature. In 1954 people like Aristoteles Onassis or Rainier of Monaco were startled by the beauty of the Pitiusan coves. Ibiza then discovered tourism and began to prosper and grow.
However during the 60's the ones to really enjoy the island were the hippies. They were the first to transgress. Idealists from all over the world chose Ibiza or Formentera as their paradise to live in peace. They listened to music, enjoyed the nature and smoked.

In 1964 the Rolling Stones spent a couple of days on holiday in San Antonio. By now the island had more than five thousand hotel occupancies. Europe convulses in May of 68 whilst the film More, with music by Pink Floyd, filmed and inspired in Ibiza, presents the island as paradise for drug consumption.

In March of 1970 the Planells family decide to end their long life in the country and move to a flat in town. They sell their 'finca' (country house) and the house to Maria Fuencisla Martínez de Campos y Muñoz (a widow from an aristocratic background). This is when the most recent history of our discotheque really begins.

The island begins to enjoy a freedom unheard of in the rest of Spain. The house soon to become Amnesia turns into a meeting point for idealists and counter-culturists. The hippies play in live bands and amongst their friends, they dance till dawn, prepare vegetarian meals and ecstasies with The Doors whilst smoking and experimenting with LSD. They touched the heavens, organized art exhibitions and many other events.

In 1974 a young man born in Madrid, with a degree in philosophy came on to the scene, his name was Antonio Escohotado. He arrives on Ibiza looking to start a new life. He is soon to be the new apostle for the new drug experimentations.

On Nov 20th forty years of dictatorship end. Franco dies and Juan Carlos the 1st is proclaimed king.

One fine day in May 76 Antonio makes a deal with the landlady of the house and she rents it to him for 20.000 pesetas (120€) a month. Now all that was left was to christen the discotheque. He thought hard about this until he came across the name, The Workshop of Forgetfulness. He wanted to express that when people go out at night it is to forget their problems and indulge in an unknown world far away from ordinary routine. The next day he realized that just one word from Greek etymology explained it all. This of course was Amnesia and that is how the islands most authentic discotheque was born.
The summer of 78 Bob Marley gave an unforgettable performance and 'new wave' begins to blossom whilst 'Saturday night fever' shows its premiere release. Disco music heiress to the Philadelphian sound, eclipses into rock and the rhythm at the disco's start a new hedonist way of life.

That year amanufacturer from Madrid named Ginés Sánchez takes over Amnesia. This seams was achieved by other promoters during negotiations on the island. This is when a decade of ups and downs begin, during which unexpected closings of the discotheque are intertwined with glorious summers with the crowd at its most and in full on competition against the other discotheques, such as Ku (now Privilege), Pacha, Glory's and Lola's (these last two no longer exist).

In the 80's a young Basque initially linked to Ku is become the leading character in the most famous events in the old house in San Rafael. The person in question is Prontxio Izaguirre who brought fresh ideas to the nocturnal life and brought Amnesia to spread its fame throughout Europe.

Almost in a breaths take the music changed from Led Zeppelin to Bowie, from Springsteen to Madonna and from Donna Summer to Prince. The discotheque went from egg-carton soundproofing to a new, captivating and powerful sound. This is when dance music began and new trends and fusions. The line is faded between pop and funk. Hip-hop is born along with break-dance and rap. Free style in mixing is permitted and house is about to take over.

The Ibizencan discotheques introduce the magic of open rooftops and the original Balearic sound emerges and dj Alfredo Fiorito is the man heard.

The most important changes came from the hands of MFC at the beginning of the 90's. The Berlin wall comes down and house music becomes international. The night of the 22nd of June 91 is still remembered to this day on the island. It's another day in history for re-openings. Thousands of young people invade Amnesia, labeling the beginning of the last most fruitful times in this temple of sound.
The clubs of Ibiza start to become famous worldwide. Although due to neighbors complaints the authorities oblige them to cover the dance-floors, which had traditionally functioned in the open air. Nevertheless Amnesias expansion is unstoppable. From four bars it grows to sixteen, from thirty employees to more than two hundred in mid summer. These include waiters, spectacular go-go dancers', security, light-jockeys and office workers amongst others.

In 1999 the UN claims Ibiza cultural heritage. The island reaches one hundred thousand habitants and the label Amnesia extends from magazines to records, cloths'etc. Its fame grows like its foam, that foam that names one of its most important performances. Today in the 21st century who hasn't heard of parties like 'Cocoon Club', 'La Troya Asesina' or 'Cream'? Disc-jockeys like Sven Väth, Paul Van Dyk, Dj Tiësto, Danny Tenaglia, Laurent Garnier or Carl Cox are just some of the legendary stars to have passed through the dj booth.

Likewise the list of rich and famous that have been to the disco during their summer holidays is endless' Naomi Campbell, Puf Daddy, Dolce & Gabbana, Bono, Boy George, Elle McPherson, George Michael, Valentino Rossi and Calvin Klein' the gods of fashion and beauty.

One of the secrets to its success lies in the quality of its sound. Today the discotheque has one of the most advanced sound systems (Expanded Amnesia Technology) due to the dynamic electronic process. Its function is to analyze and submit frequencies that provoke the human body to feel sensations that compare to having a sound massage' enjoy it!
From 2006 til date, Amnesia has been awarded for 3 consecutive years the prestigious BEST GLOBAL CLUB award in the Winter Music Conference which is held every year in Miami during the last week of March.

In 2009 Amnesia installed a system of 24 color lasers with the latest technology controllable like a robot. 23 lasers are 1 Watt RGB and there is one high power RGBY Matrix. The combination results in a spectacle unimaginable.

Currently Amnesia is about to begin to open franchises in four key destinations, these franchises must meet strict requirements to guarantee to be as similar as possible to the original club of Ibiza.

Cala Codolar

Cala Codolar is situated at seven kilometres from Sant Josep de sa Talaia, located between sa Figuera Borda and Cala Corral, as well as in the surroundings of the village of Club Delfín, and the marina of Coralmar.

This v-shaped sea inlet is characterized by a quite small size, with abrupt cliffs on the sides (on the right side there is the village and on the left side there is a thick pine wood which reaches the coastline), the beach is covered by sand, the slope is gentle (at 40 metres from the coast there is a depth of one and a half metres), the wind blows gently in the summer, from the sea or from the side, and there are some escars (typical dry docks).

The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are excellent in this bay (two hectometres large in the entrance and two and a half long until you reach the actual beach). It is exposed to the wind from the southwest-west-northwest, you can anchor next to the beach on a sandy ground with seaweed where the depth ranges from three to ten metres.
The accessibility by car is easy following the signs and the deviations. The private car can be left on a free parking area in the surroundings. You can also reach this beach with the public transport. The nearest bus stop is located at half a hectometre.

These characteristics explain that the beach is not very crowded by tourists.

Es Codolar

Es Codolar (“the stony area”), beach that includes Pont de Baix and Estanys des Codols (eastern area, near the wetland ses Salines, centre of salt extraction), is situated at 10 kilometres from Eivissa, located between sa Caleta and Cap des Falcó, as well as in the surroundings of the village Can Codolar (western area), the possessió (rural finca) Can Mosson and the airport of Eivissa (intermediate area). this coastal stretch is characterized by being very long, it is an area covered by pebbles with a very gentle slope (at 50 metres from the coast there is a depth of only 1,8 metres), the orientation is toward west, the wind blows gently from the east, from the sea, the vegetation is rare and there is a constant noise of planes that take off and land in the nearby airport. This last particularity explains that the beach is not crowded and that it is nudist, although it hasn't been officially declared. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good. Cafe Mambo

The iconic Cafe Mambo sits in the centre of what has become known as the sunset strip in San Antonio. Established in 1994 by Javier Anadon and against all advice, the original small ibicencan and derelict house has become a prevailing force in the dance music industry. With international Djs of the calibre of Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez, Paul Oakenfold and Frankie Knuckles playing regular sets, not to mention appearances by Groove Armada, Faithless, BodyRockers, Danni Minogue (to name a few) Cafe Mambo has firmly established itself as a visionary frontrunner in a highly competitive field.

Beloved by locals and celebrated by tourists, in a few years Cafe Mambo has become a magnet for bona fide musical talent.

The Ibicencan Sunset has been serenaded for centurys but never as seductively as at Cafe Mambo, just take a look at our sunset video
To listen to the strains of such classics as The sound of silence by Simon and Garfunkel (genius) while sipping a mojito and slowly watching the sun dissapear into the med with its Midas touch is bewitching.
With the significance of another night just beginning in Ibiza not lost on the thousands of spectators every summer, the sunset is a legendary start to the night ahead.

In 2007 Cafe Mambo was honoured for the second time with the prestigious Dj Award for the best Bar in Ibiza. This was international recognition for the marked contribution Cafe Mambo has made to the island, changing the way people perceive San Antonio within the music industry and generally making a tangible difference to the way bars and restaurants think in Ibiza. The Customer has become a priority and levels of service have risen thanks to the flawlessness of places like Cafe Mambo, Savannah and Villa Mercedes.

Originally a derelict house which just happened to be facing one of the most Famous sunsets in the world, the shrewdness of the Mambo team have ensured that its original personality has not been lost. The bar is decorated with tradional Ibicencan features such as mosaics and marble and the terrace has been designed to compliment the surrounding area. Coupled with state of the art sound technology, free wifi, a contemporary menu and of course THAT view. Mambo is a flourishing example of a fusion of old and new with that injection of pioneer spirit essential to creating a thriving business.

Being on the sharp end of forward thinking in Ibiza has led to Cafe Mambo hosting many of the islands exclusive and renowned parties.
Most famously Radio 1 has used Mambo as the central base for its infamous weekender featuring live broadcasts on Radio 1 including Pete Tongs essential selection and events hosted by Vernon Kay and Tess Daley.
Galaxy FM Radio has also long collaborated with Cafe Mambo with live broadcasts and performances including Roger Sanchez, Axwell, Wally Lopez, Satoshi Tomei and Lisa Lashes to name a few.

This year sees Mambo soaring to new heights once again..with a list of pre parties that will have you rubbing your eyes in disbelief, the worlds best DJs are still gracing the decks of Mambo 15 years on and the Cafe Mambo name is being spread far and wide. With great new collaborations with Bench clothing, Red Bull and Pioneer to name a few, and many great new things in the pipeline, not least a World Tour being planned for the Winter months it seems that the Cafe Mambo legacy is good for a few more years yet!!!
